At Afshar Hospital, English classes offered through AMOR Afghanistan Health Organization are doing more than just teaching a language—they’re opening doors for female staff to advance their medical education and provide better care for mothers and children.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, these classes are available five days a week, with alternating schedules for female and male staff. With 43 of the 95 registered participants being women, the program has become a vital resource in a country where educational opportunities are incredibly limited for women.
Ms. Adila Karimi, a health educator at Afshar Hospital, shared how the program has made a difference in her life. “Before this, I was unable to speak or communicate in English,” Karimi said. “As we all know, there is no opportunity for females outside to learn English, but this course at Afshar hospital is a very good chance for us.” Karimi also shared that with her new language skills, she can now easily navigate the hospital’s computer system, making her job much easier.
By giving staff the chance to learn English and continue their medical education, the program is directly improving healthcare services at Afshar Hospital, which specializes in maternal and neonatal care. Khalida Walizada, an OPD nurse, emphasized this, saying, “I couldn’t solve my problems because all our books in the nursing stations are in English.” Walizada explained how she’s now able to not only read nursing books but also access additional medical education resources online to improve her clinical knowledge.
Both women expressed their gratitude for AMOR’s donors and English instructor for making this class readily available to them despite the strict practices currently in Afghanistan.
