It’s hard to imagine being turned away from a hospital because of complications with your pregnancy, but that was the reality for the mother of Baby Kawsar, born on April 6, at Afshar Hospital through an emergency C-section. When Kawsar was born, at just 28 weeks of gestation, she had difficulty breathing, and actually had to be resuscitated by the neonatal team.
Kawsar was whisked off to the neonatal nursery at Afshar where she continued showing signs of respiratory distress. Her tiny chest heaved and her oxygen levels fell to 60%. The baby’s x-rays showed signs of Respiratory Distress Syndrome, so the neonatal team quickly decided to administer the drug Survanta.
This life-saving medicine changed the course of Kawsar’s young life and provided hope and peace of mind to her family. Her condition immediately improved. Her oxygen levels reached 96%, and she was placed on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy while she remained in the critical care ward of the neonatal nursery.
Three days later, the team at Afshar slowly began feeding Kawsar through a feeding tube. By the 10th day in the nursery, she was already tolerating 70% of her feeding, and she was taken off CPAP. Then, after 28 days in the neonatal nursery, Kawsar was discharged from Afshar Hospital.
Today, Kawsar remains in good health and continues to reach developmental milestones. Her family is thankful for the neonatal team at Afshar Hospital, who made it possible for their newborn to get the care she needed.
AMOR continues to strive to provide lifesaving health care like Kawsar received, for everyone who needs it. The neonatal nursery at Afshar regularly provides these and similar newborn services, and we are only able to increase the level of care thanks to your generous support.
