Eva is a single mother of two girls, Kayli (6) and Sofia (4), who recently arrived in Mendota from Mexico. When Kayli started school, she only spoke Spanish and struggled to make friends and understand her homework. Eva wanted to help her daughters succeed, but wasn’t sure where to start.
After hearing about the AMOR Wellness Center from a neighbor, Eva came in looking for food assistance and support. During the visit, the AMOR team learned about the girls’ challenges adjusting to a new language. They suggested enrolling Sofia in Waterford Upstart, a partnership program at AMOR Wellness for pre-K students. Eva quickly signed Sofia up.
Waterford provided a laptop, internet access, and learning materials designed for Spanish-speaking children. Although Sofia was enrolled, the whole family gathered around for each lesson and over time their confidence in English grew.
Kayli’s teacher soon noticed the difference. She was communicating more easily, making friends, and participating in class. And when Sofia started kindergarten, she walked in prepared and ready to learn. With the support they found at AMOR Wellness, Eva saw her daughters grow more confident each day and felt hopeful about the future they are building in Mendota.
